Zāļu Tirgus - Midsummer herbs and grass market at the Dome Square in Riga

The Herbs and Grass Market is held at the very “heart” of Old Riga on the 22th of June, one day before the summer solstice, or Jāņi (pronounced as “Yaany”), as this hugely popular feast is called in Latvian. The market gathers not only flower and greenery vendors, but also many craftsmen – potters and cheese-makers, weavers and bakers, blacksmiths and basket makers, brewers and jewellers, carvers, knitters, pastry-cooks, tailors, farmers… Folk song and dance ensembles perform at the nearby stage, and together – friendly people, rich colors, merry melodies – they create that vibrant and festive atmosphere that you can only feel on the verge of a true Latvian summer.
